What is Puppy Pre-School?

CDODC advocates that the benefits of training and socialisation in puppies as young as six weeks old far outweigh the remote possibility of your puppy becoming ill from attending Puppy Preschool. The period between three and 12 weeks of age is a crucial stage of a pup’s early development. A lack of socialisation during this critical period may have life-long repercussions. The critical period for socialisation begins to decline at about 14-16 weeks, after which the pup will never be so receptive to new stimuli again.

Classes are held inside our Clubhouse on a Wednesday evening. Pups must have had at least their first vaccination to attend. We take every precaution to ensure a disease-free environment for puppies attending our Puppy Preschool. Our floors are vinyl and are thoroughly disinfected each week before Puppy Preschool classes. To further reduce the risk of harbouring disease, we ask that shoes be removed before entering the main hall area. Instructors hands are also disinfected before and after each class.

  • socialise the pup and make it a well mannered and enjoyable pet to own. The pup learns to play as well as cope with lots of different people, loud noises, older dogs, children and novel stimuli early in life;
  • teach owners about the normal behaviour of dogs, how to recognise early behavioural problems and how to prevent them, as well as covering aspects such as how to house train, how to stop biting and barking, good games to play etc.; and
  • educate owners on other aspects of pet care.

Our standard membership fees apply for puppy pre-school. Please visit our ‘Fees’ page for more information.

This means that once you have completed puppy pre-school with us, you can continue on to Sunday morning training at no additional cost (until membership is due for renewal).

Puppies must be booked into this class in advance as numbers are strictly limited.
We require the following information before we can advise you when classes are available:

  • pup’s date of birth
  • pup’s name & breed
  • name of person who will be handling your pup
  • contact phone number for the handler

Please email Jan at preschool@croydondogclub.com.au for bookings and other information regarding this class.

FREE BOOKS ON PUPPY TRAINING

We encourage everyone who is thinking of getting a puppy, or has recently acquired one, to download and read Dr Ian Dunbar’s two free books, BEFORE You Get Your Puppy and AFTER You Get Your Puppy.

These books are essential reading for all owners of dogs under 12 months of age and will show you how to prevent problems like house-soiling and destructive chewing, and how to raise a dog that is quiet, calm and well-mannered as well as obedient and confident around people.

Visit Dog Star Daily for more free advice on training and behaviour. Dr. Dunbar’s Before and After books have been made available free of charge courtesy of the author.
